Peristerona village is a beautiful small village, located in a
semi-mountainous region on the base of the Troodos mountains and at about
300m above the sea level. It is about 8 km south of Polis Town and is easily
accessible nowadays. The village has
beautiful
views to the sea[Chrysochous Bay] and
Polis&Akamas area. Also the nearby[2km] Evretou Dam can be seen from
some Peristerona locations.
Peristerona derives its name from the word peristeri –meaning
pigeon. Years ago there were thousands of pigeons living in the nearby
spectacular "gorge of the eagles"
which can be visited today for excellent photography.
The local economy is primarily agricultural and there are many small farm
holdings still apparent.
In r ecent
years, the economy have seen a rise in tourism related activities due to
the popular demand of the area which is rich in natural beauty, has a
cool climate and has a traditional Cypriot atmosphere and architecture.
Peristerona is always a very green village due to the lush
vegetation, and like most of the Polis area, is spectacular in the winter
and spring months, and ideal for artists and photographers and people who
like hiking.
The local church is dedicated to St
Mamas and is like most village churches located in the centre of the
village.
Next to the church you will find a pop art museum which is open daily. The area of
Peristerona is also home of four other very old & small churches
dedicated to St Theodoros, St George, St Zoni, The Holy Fathers.
About Polis Town
Polis is the local area center with
high-school/technical school many Apartments/Hotels and county villas
available for rent to the many tourists visiting Polis, and has almost any
service or product to buy: supermarkets, taverns, fish
taverns, CTO-Tourist Office, banks, shops, restaurants/taverns, bars,
cafes, vehicle rental offices,... .
You will
also find a hospital, police station, fire station, pharmacies, district
administration office, camping site, many petrol stations and more. In Polis
municipality is included and the fishing village of Latchi with a harbor,
many fish taverns, a disco, shops and many bars and tourism apartments.
Polis is located North West of Cyprus in the region of Pafos just 30 minute
drive distance from the town of Pafos, 45 minutes from Pafos airport and
about 2 hours from Larnaca airport.
Polis is
also near Akamas National Park with places like Baths
of Aphrodite, Akamas Peninsula, Baths of Adonis, many sandy beaches,...
etc. So, Polis correctly characterized the most beautiful place of the
Island of Cyprus !
